Maria Ionela’s Christening Ceremony

Maria Ionela being received inot the family of the Church

Ionela first came to St Margaret’s in 2009 having been in a variety of children social care centres in the care of the local authorities for the previous four years. She had been abandoned by her mother shortly after birth and her sole guardian was her maternal grandmother. Her Gran had taken care of her needs, nurtured her and surrounded her with love and affection until she was 3 years old but the child’s condition became an increasing challenge so Gran decided to contact the local authority for help and to find suitable medical care for her grand-daughter.

These days, Ionela’s Gran is her sole visitor, the one and only relative who always takes time to spend a little quality time with her. Recently, with Ionela’s birthday coming up, her Gran realised that her granddaughter had not been christened when she was born, so she decided to ask the social work team at Saint Margaret’s for help. The centre’s staff immediately contacted the parish priest in a nearby Church to arrange this celebration and welcome into the community of the church.

A small party including her Gran, her Godparents and some of the centre staff attended the christening service. Afterwards, everyone returned to St Margaret’s where an intimate party was held to celebrate this wonderful event. Surrounded by children and in a relaxed atmosphere, everyone enjoyed eating the absolutely delicious sweets prepared and contributed by Ionela’s Gran and they all had fun spending the afternoon in good company.

Everyone sang “Happy birthday” to Ionela and wished her “good health and happiness in the future!”
