A Real “Baby Doll”

Alexia wrapped to keep her warm

Alexia Paun is our newest refugee from one of Bucharest’s children’s hospitals to find love and care at St Margaret’s Hospices in Bucharest.   At three month she remains a tiny child who can be held on one hand. She is so small that the nursing team had to initially strip a doll recently delivered from the UK to make sure she had the knitted jackets she needed to keep her warm enough.  Her head is tiny, her hands are flexed and rigid and her feet turn outwards and are difficult to move.

As a tiny baby failing to thrive she is very difficult to feed but the staff is doing sterling work, trying to increase her weight. She does not smile yet and although her eyes roam around the room it is not clear how much she can see.

This tiny scrap of humanity needs our help.  Left in a general ward of even the best Children’s Hospital in Romania she would waste away and her young mother was desperate to get better help for her child.  She needs a lot of stimulation and perhaps some music and singing would help her.

Cristi, her physiotherapist, is working hard on the feet and wrists and also trying to establish some head control.   He has a case load of all the hospice children to look after so time is necessarily limited but he is working daily on her mobility.

It is hard to predict the outcome for Alexia.  She has a small head and is physically compromised.   She does, however, need a loving and enthusiastic sponsor.  Members of the Craft Guild have rallied round and are knitting furiously however with so small and so petit a baby we need lots more. Can you help us to look after Alexia?  Some more tiny clothes would be a splendid start.
