Visitors bring help, hope and happiness

Priests and parishioners visiting St Laurence

With Easter week in the offing, the priests and members of the congregation of the Orthodox Parish Church of Saint Peter and Paul in Medgidia, recently paid an impromptu visit to the St Laurence Campus. They came bearing gifts for the resident with sweets, fresh fruits, clothing, footwear, prayer booklets, religious calendars, icons, new baked cake and a traditional ‘coliva’. The latter a delicious dish made from boiled wheat, which makes a delicious as a dessert. During a previous visit, in discussion with the young residents, the parishioners had learnt that coliva is one of the resident’s favourite dishes, which thank goodness, they don’t get to eat it too often these days. It is usually prepared as part of a traditional funeral meal and only served in times of sorrow. The parishioners had decided to surprise them none the less by bringing it along as their favourite dessert.

Our young residents are involved in trying to better the lives of kids in an impoverished local community family, but their visitors already aware of their commitment and had brought donations of new clothes, food and toys to assist, so they decided simply to empower the St Laurence residents in helping the kids and the family involved. In saying their farewells, the visitors wanted to know if the St Laurence residents were pleased to have their support. They were told wholeheartedly that there were no words to express the gratitude of the residents and that they are always welcome to visit, as their company and words of wisdom bring only comfort and peace.
