Walking the Camino to change the lives of children

John on an earlier adventure

The Camino, that historic pilgrimage route, which starting in France wends its way to Santiago de Compostela, has long fascinated John Burns, CID’s newest Trustee and long-term volunteer. Whilst realising that such a pilgrimage might soon be beyond his diminishing physical abilities; as part of his extended 70th birthday celebrations John and  his son Andy  plan  to walk the ultimate part of ‘the way’, the Camino Ingles. In all, this is a distance of some 80 kilometers, starting in Corona and finishing at the great door of Cathedral of St James, this Good Friday. They believe that this will be an amazing experience. Both have decided that their adventure should benefit others less fortunate than themselves, and their pilgrimage walk hopefully will raise funds to repair a damaged heating system in one of CID Romania’s most successful community education and welfare projects.

St Cristofer’s in Curtea de Arges offers local children living in grinding rural poverty help to attend school regularly and with the very basics of life, like simply having boots or shoes to wear in winter. Work often so vial that it gives youngsters a chance to raise themselves out of poverty. All the monies received by them will go towards the work at St Cristofer’s.
