Another Valentina joins the little family at St Margaret’s

Valentina with her nurse carer

The care team at St Margaret’s recently welcomed, the first day of summer, and a beautiful little girl called Valentina, a cheerful and playful almost two year old. Valentina has been diagnosed with Down syndrome and a severe and very complex heart condition, which prevents her from being cared for at home. Valentina has one of a family of seven children being brought up by their parents in extremely poor home conditions.   Sadly, her parents are both illiterate and she is defined as ‘at risk’, since they find it difficult if not impossible to care for her appropriately or to administer her treatment and medication.

When Valentina was 10 months old. Valentia was taken into care the by the Child Protection Department of Calarasi County, and placed in a local residential centre for children with disabilities. Unfortunately, the centre did not cater to her specific needs; accordingly, she was frequently admitted to a specialist paediatric cardiac unit in Bucharest so that she could receive appropriate medical care. After numerous hospital admissions, the hospital’s medical team contacted representative of the social work team at Children in Distress, shared her case details, and began inquiries about the legal process needed to have her re-located to an appropriate care facility and service. At the end of a prolonged, complex and often tortuous process, Valentina joined CID’s little extended family of care living at St Margaret’s. The care team wishes her a warm welcome and are committed to help improve her health and encourage her development.
