Little Stefania has found a new home!

Stefania on admission

The little family of children and carers that make up St Margaret’s warm and welcoming family, has recently opened their welcoming arms to a new tiny tot. Little Stefania M., at only 2 months old, is the smallest baby ever admitted and cared for in the Hospice.  Having spent until now, all of her short life in the intensive care ward of the Maternity Unit in Ploiesti, Stefania suffers from Edwards Syndrome, a genetic malformation of chromosome 18. This relatively rare condition occurs in one in 5000 live births and results in a tiny baby, with severe intellectual impairment and complex cardiac complications. Her parents are unable to offer the intensive care and support Stefania will need throughout her very short life expectancy. One or other of her parents, will have themselves unknowingly inherited ‘mosaic trisomy’. Her mum is a young teenager with a chaotic family background and Stefania’s parents have found it difficult to visit, as they cannot afford the cost of travel from their home in Ploiesti, which is about an hour outside the capital.

St Margaret’s care team welcome Stefania to our family of care and they can help her reach her full potential among her new friends.
