Making friends and influencing people

Participants proud to have their diploma

Life is often the better for making new friends and building bridges. And that, is exactly what the children enrolled in the education and welfare project based at St Cristofer’s did recently, with some guests invited from Calotesti–Budesa. This is another rural village commune at the heart of Arges County, which nestles on the left bank of the Arges River, where it forms the Budeasa reservoir,

The kids arrived fairly pooped, after quite a long hot bus journey and were welcomed with a superb buffet lunch served in St Cristofer’s garden play area.  The weather was more than kind, allowing for lots of outdoor fun and games, activities to help everyone to get to know one another. The local caterer having heard of the event, had very generously, sponsored lunch for everyone. After a great lunch, and a quick reviving siesta, everyone got down to business in hand with as lots of joint activities and games.  There was a quiet friendly rivalry to see who knew more, who learnt more in school but also a lot of mutual help to see each other to finish each task just in time.

Towards the end of their day together, everyone received a lovely diploma for hard work and in friendship; they raised a glass of fruit juice in the honour of newfound friends. A great time, was had by all, everyone enjoyed himself or herself and everyone was inclusively made part of the day. No one was made to feel ‘different’ or seemed to notice that the visitors came not only from a different village, but also from a different ethnic community (namely the Roma community), nor was anyone labelled as poor or in need. They were all, as the Scot’s would say “all just Jock Tamson’s bairns.”

It soon become clear that the children had more in common than divided them and that is how we should feel every day at school and in our neighbourhoods.
