St. Christofer’s celebrates the Universal Day of the Romanian “Ie”

Preparing for the celebrations

The Kids at St Cristofer’s recently celebrated the second celebration of the traditional Romanian Blouse the “Ie” which is pronounced “ee-eh”. They did so in a playful, cheerful, and colourful way full of songs and dance. Each of them to wore something representative for traditional costume. The girls wore their blouses with pride during their dances and games and when they painted traditional motifs using natural motifs of leaves and branches

The children shared with  their colleagues what is the hidden meaning behind the folklore motifs sewn on their beautiful blouses believing their grandparents used to do, that the cross protects the wearer from bad luck, curses or witchcraft and the sun and flowers bring harmony, peace and joy when they are carefully sewn in using various colourful or precious threads. In the past, the motifs also had another purpose, offering information about the wearer about the age and social status. For instance, youngsters used to wear vivid colours, especially fiery red hues but after marriage, the colours would become muted and finally the elders used to select black and white blouses, a sign of maturity.

The day ended with a hike and time spent surrounded by nature, where the children were left to their own devices to pick flowers and make wreaths out of them for the girls when they started to dance the traditional “hora”, a lovely circle dance. Almost all of them asked us if they could continue to wear the blouse over the next couple of days as they enjoyed the feeling and they understood and appreciated their beauty and the importance of maintaining traditions.  It was  a wonderful meaningful  day for the children which they hope to repeat in the future! So Happy “Ie” Day!
